đź“– Story
Fracture is set in the late 2100s, during a future where climate change and rising sea levels have split the United States into two rival factions:
-
The Atlantic Alliance (East Coast & Europe): Focused on cybernetic technology.
-
The Pacificans (West Coast & Asia): Embraced genetic engineering to adapt to the environment.
This ideological rift turns into civil war. The Pacificans, led by General Sheridan, begin rebelling with their genetically enhanced soldiers.
You play as Jet Brody, a cybernetically enhanced soldier of the Atlantic Alliance, sent to stop the Pacificans’ plans and prevent the genetic war from consuming the world.
The narrative is straightforward and militaristic, revolving around themes of science gone too far and futuristic warfare.
🕹 Gameplay
Core Mechanics
-
Third-Person Shooter Combat:
-
Cover-based shooting mixed with run-and-gun mechanics.
-
Jet Brody wields standard futuristic firearms (rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, grenades).
-
-
Terrain Deformation (TDV – Terrain Deformation Technology):
-
The game’s main innovation. Players can dynamically raise or lower the ground in real time using special weapons.
-
Terrain shaping is used for:
-
Creating cover during firefights.
-
Reaching higher areas by raising the ground.
-
Solving environmental puzzles.
-
Blocking or funneling enemies.
-
-
-
Weapons & Tools:
-
Entrencher Rifle: Fires rounds that raise terrain.
-
Tectonic Grenades: Create craters by collapsing ground.
-
Spike Grenades: Cause pillars of rock to shoot upward.
-
Standard firearms for combat.
-
-
Puzzles & Exploration:
-
Terrain manipulation is often required to access new areas, cross obstacles, or activate switches.
-
Some puzzles demand creative use of both raising and lowering land to proceed.
-
Missions & Structure
-
Linear Campaign: Around 8–10 hours long, mission-based progression.
-
Locations include battlefields, underground facilities, and futuristic military installations.
-
Heavy mix of firefights and environmental challenges.
-
Multiplayer:
-
Online competitive modes for up to 12 players.
-
Terrain deformation adds a tactical twist to standard deathmatch and objective-based modes.
-
Unfortunately, player base was very small, and servers later shut down.
-
🎨 Presentation
-
Graphics:
-
Futuristic but somewhat generic environments (military bases, rocky canyons, sci-fi labs).
-
Terrain deformation tech was impressive but came with repetitive visuals.
-
-
Sound:
-
Explosive, action-movie style effects.
-
Orchestral, militaristic soundtrack.
-
Voice acting is serviceable but not particularly memorable.
-
-
Tone:
-
Serious, military-sci-fi vibe, leaning into action rather than deep storytelling.
-
📝 Reception
-
Praise:
-
Terrain deformation was innovative and fun in short bursts.
-
Creative use of the environment added depth to combat and puzzles.
-
Solid shooter mechanics at the core.
-
-
Criticism:
-
Story and characters were bland and forgettable.
-
Level design and missions grew repetitive.
-
Graphics and style felt dated compared to other 2008 shooters (Gears of War 2, Resistance 2).
-
Multiplayer never gained traction.
-
âś… In short:
Fracture on Xbox 360 is a sci-fi third-person shooter with a unique gimmick: real-time terrain manipulation. While the story of genetic vs. cybernetic warfare was forgettable, and the core shooting fairly generic, its terrain-altering mechanics stood out as a fresh idea. It’s remembered as an ambitious but flawed experiment that showed promise but didn’t achieve long-term success.
